As March closes we here at the Unincorporated have been reviewing new songs for the month. And in honor of the month, we have separated them into two mixes; the 'quieter' mix, ELEVEN, and the 'rowdier', TWELVE.
Wait a minute, doesn't March come in like a lion and go out like a lamb? That's what they say, but it is cold and windy here in Limestone with gusts up to 45 mph; it was really nice at the beginning of the month.

Punk' N Center 10: Food GLORIOUS Food!

Hello.
We at the Unincorporated have a had an incredible culinary weekend. We had the opportunity to eat at two restaurants, both way off the beaten path, and both great for totally different reasons.

It started Friday evening with music and food at Bowmantown Music Barn. Now, the music barn is something of a misnomer, as it is a ramshackle building made of scraps of aluminum, plywood, and flea market finds. They have music and dinner there every Friday night, and usually have a couple of bluegrass bands on the schedule, plus the house band. Before words on the food itself, a word on the music. It never ceases to amaze how many talented musicians there are out there. Both the bands playing that night were good bluegrass bands, but the house band was unreal; it was a family where the dad played bass, the two older sons played guitar and mandolin, and the youngest, about twelve, played banjo. And boy did he play. Perhaps the most amazing musician we have seen in a long time, and maybe the best banjo player ever that we've seen perform live.
Now, about the food. Standard Appalachian fare: beans, cornbread, tea. But as a meat option they had "streaked meat". What is streaked meat you ask? Well, you start with fatback. Bread it. Deep fry it. Yeah, we know. Not healthy, but authentic.

Then Saturday we went out the "real" boonies to CJ Papadops. This restaurant is run by a Grecian woman and her hillybilly husband since 1983. Everything was cooked to order, and everything was excellent. A slow paced, awesome meal.

Then Sunday night we watched Milk back at Unincorporated headquarters. This movie left us feeling... unmoved. Also disappointing was minimal mention of the Twinkie defense employed by Harvey Milk's murderer. That would have put the fitting cap on a very food-centric weekend.

However, it did inspire an epicurian Punk' N Center Ten.

Chuck has an old school flow we can all get behind.

Newish band, included here because, well the song has cake in the title.

7 Mayonaise Brain:Bobby Bare Jr.
Hobbitish looking man, creating some awesome country pop.

8 Digsy's Dinner:Oasis
Ahh, the insular time that was the Ninties.

9 Peanut Vendor:Pérez Prado
The king of the mambo.

10 Dinner for Two:Deerhoof
Weird, awesome, pop. Deerhoof.

11 The Food (Ft. Kanye West):Common
We can't get away from Mr. West. Common's all right.

12 A Cookie As Big As My Head:Lunch Money
Kids' song, bringing our mix to a close with dessert. Features the line, "By the way my cookie policy is Chocolate Chip only."

Punk' N Center Nine!

Hello.

Have you all heard that the economy is bad? Well one of the two counties that Unincorporated Headquarters (here in beautiful Limestone, TN) straddles has 14 % unemployment. Yeah, that's right, birthplace of Davy Crockett and no jobs.
We here at Punk' N Center have elected to do our part. We have compiled a vaguely fiscal/occupational mix for this week. Consider it our musical stimulus package.

Newish band, part of this neo-folk movement, Sam Beam godfather.

3) Money Up:M Shanghai String Band
House band at the M Shanghai Cafe. There are 100s of people in this band, just look at this pic.

Do not try to Google this band. It will lead you nowhere. Oh, and David Byrne called, he wants his voice back.

5) F-Olding Money:Tommy Blake
Oldies are the greatest.

6) Working Part Time:The Henry Clay People
This band's whole album seems to be economy themed.
"Just trying to gain some experience for whatever was coming next"

7) Money Changes Everything:Cyndi Lauper
Originally this song slot was held by Dan Reeder and All My Money, but at the last minute we realized that it was DRM protected by Apple. No Dan Reeder, but let's all take a moment and sing the praises of Cyndi Lauper. For the eighties this song has a pretty kickin' arrangement, shades of today's indie pop.

8) Funky Dollar Bill:Funkadelic
The guitar riff on this song is awesome, awesome enough to inspire this. Canadians, hah.

9) Work for Your Money:Howlin’ Wolf
Howlin's face is terrific. We are actually uncertain whether this song has anything to do with money or work.
"I might leave you baby, goin' down to the coast"

10) I've Got Money:James Brown
It would be easy to but a JB song on every single Punk' N Center... don't tempt us.
"I believe I'll sing the blues one more time..."

11) Working Poor:Horse Feathers
Iron & Wine, your influence is widespread!

12) Cash In My Pocket [Chew Fu Small Room Remix]:Wiley feat Daniel Merriweather
Joyful end, and let's face it, this is the solution to the crisis. We want Skrilla. We need Skrilla.

We have been compiling this month's new music here at headquarters. What we are always surprised by is the amount the interesting new music out there, but the volume is sometimes overwhelming, hence the two week delay in since our last post. However, to make up for it, we present a double dose of music that has seen its American release in the month of February.

Punk' N Center SIX

Hello.
Was anyone else slightly disappointed in Punk' N Center Five? We certainly were, and albeit we concede that perhaps quality was sacrificed at the sake of maintaining a theme and 12 song playlist, the Unincorporated did not want to repeat this for SIX. Our colleague in Ro-Town warned us against that, but.... all we can say is you told us so.

This week we are excited though about what we have. One of the better tracks off last week's mix was the Cynics cover of the Brian Wilson song, and therefore we decided to run with the school theme and feature songs about educating young people.

1) School Is Out:Gary 'U.S.' Bonds
We at the unincorporated still look forward to summer the season, but no longer can we equate it with freedom. This was a hit in the sixties. "School is In" which follows in the album, less so.

2) Brain Damage:Eminem
This second song in the mix is sort of a bookend with the second to last song, except from the male perspective. We haven't seen 8 Mile, but if you grew up white in a poor black neighborhood of Detroit with the name of Marshall Mathers, this is the kind of vitriol that you would spit too.

3) Up Against The Wall: Tom Robinson Band
Punk band from the seventies, raging against, well you know kids just like to rage.

4) Middle School Frown:Josh Rouse
In this song Josh takes out his retrospectoscope and uses it to recall how he may have been meanas an adolescent. Sentiment prevails.

5) School Uniform:The Pipettes
We'll make the proclamation that this is the only GLB(sans T) song in existence about school uniforms. All done with girl group harmonies. The Pipettes have only one album, but it is excellent and worth checking out.

6) School Spirit:Kanye West
We can hear the cries now.... "Bring back the Old Kanye!"

7) College Life (1906):Billy Murray
The Unincorporated sometimes pines for days of old, and perhaps romanticizes things that need not be romanticized. Like higher education from yesteryear. Better quality, more serious. But judging from the lyrics from this song, such was not the case. BTW, not that Bill Murray, much to everyone's disappointment.

8) Don't Be A Dropout:James Brown
James. Brown.

9) I Don't Want To Go To School:The Naked Brothers Band
We at the Unincorporated know the Naked Brothers Band. Now you know the Naked Brothers Band, which by some may considered a bad thing like the Madoff Ponzi scheme or SARS. We disagree. This song rocks.

10) You Can't Blame the Youth:Bob Marley and the Wailers
"you teach the youths about the christopher columbus, and you said he was a very great man"

11) Becky: Be your own pet
We have been just waiting the use this song in a mix because it rocks beyond belief. BYOT, from Nashville, TN, now defunct.

12) College:Animal Collective
Bringing it all back to Brian Wilson.
